The Washington Commanders have officially informed veteran defensive tackle Jonathan Allen of his release, ending an eight-year tenure with the team. This decision comes after the Commanders were unable to find a trade partner willing to accommodate his $15.5 million base salary for the 2025 season. By parting ways with Allen, the team clears $16.3 million in cap space, allowing them greater financial flexibility.

Allen, a two-time Pro Bowler, has been a mainstay on Washington’s defensive line since being drafted 17th overall in 2017. Over 108 starts, he amassed an impressive 42 sacks, earning a reputation as a consistent and dynamic interior presence. His standout seasons in 2021 and 2022, during which he combined for 16.5 sacks, showcased his ability to wreak havoc on opposing offenses.

Though dependable for most of his career, Allen faced challenges during the 2024 season. A torn left pectoral sidelined him for nine games, though he managed a remarkable return late in the year for the playoffs. Despite his efforts, he logged modest stats—three sacks and seven quarterback hits compared to his usual standards—which may have factored into Washington’s decision.

The Commanders signaled their intent to reshape their defensive front with the drafting of Jer’Zhan Newton in 2024. Newton stepped in seamlessly during Allen’s injury absence, starting alongside Daron Payne. With both Montez Sweat and Chase Young traded in 2023, Payne now remains the sole starter from what was once considered a dominant unit.

For Allen, this release offers an opportunity to explore free agency, where his resume and veteran stature will likely attract suitors. Several teams had previously shown interest but preferred to wait for his release to negotiate a more favorable contract.

Washington, meanwhile, will focus on building a younger, more cost-effective defensive line around Newton and Payne, ensuring flexibility for future roster needs. While Jonathan Allen’s time with the team has ended, his legacy as a tough, dependable leader will resonate with fans and teammates alike.
