As of February 2, six cases of bird flu have been reported in Maryland, according to the state’s Department of Agriculture.

On February 2, officials announced that a preliminary test detected a presumptive positive case of bird flu at a commercial poultry farm in Worcester County.

On January 30, a confirmed case was identified in a backyard flock in Montgomery County. Authorities quarantined the property and culled the affected birds to contain the spread. Officials assured the public that no birds from the infected flock would enter the food supply.

Across the Delmarva region, nine commercial poultry operations have reported bird flu cases, including two farms in Kent County, Delaware, and one in Accomack County, Virginia, according to the MDA.

Maryland’s first reported case of bird flu was detected on January 10, 2024, through routine testing at a Caroline County farm. At the time, it was the third confirmed case in a commercial operation within the Delmarva region.

The second case was on January 14 at a commercial farm in Queen Anne’s County, and another was reported the next day at a different farm in Caroline County. On January 20, officials confirmed yet another case in Dorchester County.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and implement containment measures to prevent further spread.
